Just weeks after an Eastern Conference Finals exit, the Miami Heat offseason rumors have already reached their kickoff. Aside from single-player improvements to looming contract extensions, many should agree that the Heat are, at least, one positional move away from claiming a world title.

It was made abundantly clear during Pat Riley’s postseason exit interview that if the right opportunity presents itself, the Heat’s 26-year executive will most certainly take it, even if that means completely shuffling the deck for a big-name talent.

While it’s likely that a major change is coming, that agenda would be pushed even further on Monday evening. A few photos surfaced through the media featuring Utah Jazz star, Donovan Mitchell, who appeared to be sharing a birthday celebration with none other than Heat superstar, Jimmy Butler.

As you would’ve expected, the images above would create a huge stir among the Miami Heat Faithful.

The Miami Heat are set for big summer moves and Donovan Mitchell may be in the midst, but are talks of acquiring the Jazz guard becoming overblown?

It’s a clear consensus that several Heat assets would be suggested in a departure, that would include Tyler Herro, the NBA’s current Sixth Man of The Year winner and budding All-Star, along with Duncan Robinson for salary implications.

By any means, Mitchell’s potential fit with the Heat organization as well as his on-court presence, shouldn’t be denied. He’s an established cornerstone who can help provide a winning mentality.

It’s without question that his services would make Miami immediate title contenders, however, the fit doesn’t seem to be as seamless as many would think.

While the acquisition of Mitchell would further alleviate the scoring load for soon-to-be 33-year-old Butler, one concern that comes to mind is whether Donovan would have a strong desire of becoming a secondary option to Jimmy—let alone even be extremely comfortable sharing those duties with him.

It’s never an easy transition to go from being a clear-cut first option to second fiddle with significantly lower usage. There’s also that concern about whether Mitchell would be able to display more defensive intensity for an organization that demands versatility on that end.

With the Heat being dead last in blocks per game last season, he probably won’t have a potent shot-blocker, a la Rudy Gobert, to lean on for paint protection. Well, that’s unless the Heat can acquire one this summer (Mo Bamba, you there?).

Surely, there’s always an opportunity for growth as the season progresses, but as we’ve seen for many years in the league, chemistry can make or break even the best of teams. If the Heat make the move for Mitchell, they wouldn’t be exempt from any detriments.

As we’re still weeks away from the Heat even reaching the consideration stage regarding their roster construction, at some point they’ll need to address, internally, whether Donovan Mitchell is the final answer to their title hopes. They should be in full anticipation that he wants out from Utah and then, the chips should fall where they may.
