In what seemed like a signing that flew under the radar last summer, Alec Burks has made a significant impact that should lead to an extended future with the Miami Heat.
The 14-year veteran signed on a minimum contract last offseason and had built a reputation as a reliable professional and productive shot-maker. That’s been the same story with the Heat.
In fact, Burks found himself emerging into coach Erik Spoelstra’s starting lineup during this final stretch of the regular season. He has been reliable and trusted, making the most of the opportunities he’s received all season long.
More importantly, the Heat have looked like a better team with him in the lineup.
Burk’s emergence was significant in the Heat going on that six-game win streak and securing seven victories in a nine-game stretch. Even in one of the losses during that span, he posted an efficient season-high of 24 points in a tight loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.
As a starter, Burks has been rock solid, averaging nearly 11.5 points on 50% shooting and 46% from 3-point range.
Bringing back Alec Burks should be a no-brainer.

“I can’t say enough about veteran players that are able to evolve and do it gracefully and be able to embrace these kind of roles.”

When it comes to the Heat’s offseason plans, there will be plenty of work to do. The chase for a new star to add to the Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro-led core will be a top goal.
However, bringing back each of Davion Mitchell and Burks should also be viewed as a priority.
They have become staples in Spoelstra’s guard rotation and bring a valuable presence to the team's locker room. Burks has made his veteran minimum salary worth every penny and has earned the right to be re-signed on another team-friendly deal.
Despite entering his mid-30s, a player like Burks still has a lot of value for the price tag. He began to get more consistent minutes shortly after Dru Smith's season-ending injury and Terry Rozier's benching. His on-court consistency has yielded increased usage.
He can be used in different roles, whether off the bench or alongside the starters. Whatever Miami's roster looks like next season, Burks can find a way to contribute.
