The Miami Heat may not have made the big move that the fan base - and Bam Adebayo specifically - was anticipating, but they did shake up the roster to a certain extent. And Bam's stance on the team's biggest acquisition of the offseason is abundantly clear - he's a fan.
Speaking on the trade of Norman Powell, Bam had nothing but glowing remarks about the Heat's newest addition.
"I feel like Norman is one of those guys that floats under the radar...But as you saw this year, he’s really shown that he can be an All-Star caliber player. You’ve seen what he’s done and you’ve seen him grow in this league. And, obviously, he wants to take the next challenge... So I’m happy to have him."Bam on Powell
It's no surprise that Bam is in complete support of the addition of Powell this offseason, even if his future with the team is somewhat of an unknown at this point. Powell is going to give the Heat an immediate boost and will take significant pressure off both Tyler Herro and Bam on that end of the floor.
Sure, Powell may not hold as much weight as a Kevin Durant, but there's no question the Heat are going to emerge as an improved team this season.
The Heat still have big questions about their future
But while the Heat may have improved in theory, there are still big questions that remain unanswered about their future. And more than anything, that's what this season will be about for the Heat. Whether they're willing to admit it or not, the Heat are about to enter what many will describe as a "gap" year for the team.
Entering this season, it won't be as much about wins and losses as it will be about the continued development of their stars and young players. Could the Heat overachieve this year? Sure, they've actually been one of the better franchises at accomplishing that.
However, it's clear that this front office has been slowly building toward something big. When or how remains a mystery. But the Heat made the natural move to improve on the margins this summer, while also maintaining flexibility for the future.
With that context and level of understanding of the Heat's offseason, it's hard to blame Bam for supporting it. The Heat may not be championship relevant in theory right now, but that's likely going to change in the near future. And, who knows, maybe Powell ends up being a big part of that.
If so, this move is only going to look that much better.
