At 3-6, the Miami Heat clearly needs a leader to step up. The team appears lost more often than not on both ends of the floor, and they've yet to establish any sense of identity. With so many new parts on the roster, it's pretty obvious that it's Bam Adebayo who needs to draw a line in the sand right now.

The Heat are either going to figure this out to the best of their ability, or this season is going to get even more out of hand over the next few weeks.

Bam needs to be the leader that Giannis Antetokounmpo has quietly been asking him to be, whether it's saying how he and Bam need to set the tone at the start of games, or about the team constantly questioning their intensity and effort after a loss.

Those are the areas where a leader should step in.

The Heat desperately need Bam Adebayo to setp up as a leader

Bam needs to make sure that there are no effort issues, and he needs to set the tone every game, ensuring that the team is ready to bring it every game.

The Heat may lose some games when they're outmatched from a talent perspective. They may lose games if/when Giannis and/or Bam have off nights. But they shouldn't be losing games because the effort just isn't there.

Miami is not talented enough to get away with that. And that's where Bam, the leader of the team, needs to step in.

Before the season, Bam made it quite clear that he doesn't like being the "leader" or "captain." But if the Heat is going to be successful, that's the role he needs to play. There are no scenarios in which the Heat is successful this season without Bam taking a bigger role as the team captain or leader.

Giannis may eventually grow into that role down the line, but Bam needs to embrace it for now. He's been the player the front office has anointed as the face of the franchise. He's grown within the system; he's seen it all: the good, bad, and ugly with the Heat.

He was a huge part of the team's run to the NBA Finals in 2020 and then in 2023. It was a slightly different role, playing off Jimmy Butler, but now it's Bam's time.

This is HIS moment. This is HIS team. This is HIS build. And if the Giannis era is going to work, Bam needs to step up as a leader. The Heat likely won't find a way to turn it around until he does.
