The Miami Heat's roster is still not complete around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, but there's no panic from the team captain. Even though the Heat have entered the dog days of August without any closure on what their roster will look like this season, Bam is as confident as he's ever been.
“We’ll figure it out,” he said. “We don’t really worry about the outside noise too much. We’ve done a lot more with less.”
Not only was Bam responding to the idea that the Heat still has three roster spots open, but also to the fact that LeBron James, whom the Heat were pursuing, chose to sign with a conference rival (Philadelphia 76ers) over them.
At least for now, there's still no panic from Bam and the Heat.
Bam believes the Heat will compete for a championship
Whether that's actually the case behind closed doors or not remains to be seen, but at least publicly, Bam continues to hold a strong belief that the front office will figure things out when they matter most.
As they always have.
Bam also admitted that this season is all about winning a championship. Even though we still don't know what this roster will ultimately look like on opening night, Bam didn't mince any expectations. Now that Giannis has been acquired, it's all about winning championships.
“Being able to have that shift and that change, we’re looking for growth,” he said of the Heat landing such a superstar talent. ‘We’re ready to get to work. The goal is to win a championship. And that’s his mindset. We have a like mindset when it comes to that. So those conversations are really about winning.”
The front office still has some work to do, but it's clear that things have certainly shifted for the Heat heading into this new season. And Bam's recent comments have fueled that even further.
Despite some criticism from the national media of the Heat not having enough shooting or playmaking, it's clear that Bam isn't buying into any of those narratives. And, as the team captain, it's unlikely that he's going to allow anyone in the locker room to do that either.
Bam, now along with Giannis, is expected to set the tone for this season. Quietly, it does seem as if he's already begun to do that.
Training camp hasn't arrived yet, but Bam is already sending a strong message this summer. And he's not going to let any outside criticism get in the way of what could be a very special season for this franchise.
