Bill Simmons has been burned by the Miami Heat before and refuses to let that happen again. As foolish as it may sound, this irrational PTSD from Simmons is exactly why Heat fans shouldn't completely give up on this season just yet.
As Simmons notes, there's always one team that gets hot late in the season that could play spoiler by the time the playoffs roll around. The Heat have played that role before, most recently and notably during the 2023 postseason when they made a run all the way to the NBA Finals as a Play-In Tournament team.
This year's Heat is not as talented as that squad, especially without a premier star like Jimmy Butler, but there are still reasons Miami could show some of those similar dark-horse characteristics.
Why the Heat could be a dark horse threat in the East
For one, it should be noted that the Heat haven't been completely healthy for any stretch this season. If that can miraculously change down the stretch, it could help raise the ceiling for a team that has been more mediocre than not this year.
Another key point that has been overlooked when discussing the Heat this season is their elite defense. Quietly, the Heat have the fourth-best defensive rating in the league. That means, if the Heat can gain any level of consistency on the other end of the floor, this team has the potential to be quite dangerous when the game slows down in the playoffs.
Third, we haven't seen the best of Bam Adebayo and Kel'el Ware. The idea that they still have another gear that they can shift into, if they begin to click more consistently on the floor together, could suggest this team may have a secret weapon that no one sees coming.
Of course, Bam and Ware still need to prove that they can play off each other more productively and efficiently, but the possibilities are certainly there.
And finally, let's not overlook like the Heat still doesn't have the best coach in the league. Sure, Erik Spoelstra's reputation has taken a bit of a hit of late, but he's still one of the best schematic coaches in the league and always presents a dangerous threat in the postseason.
Can the Heat put it all together?
The big question is whether they can put it all together.
The potential is there for this team. But the concern is that Miami hasn't been able to do it thus far, so why should we expect them to all of a sudden figure it out this late in the season? That's a fair point.
However, if something magically clicks with this team over the last month before the postseason, Simmons' fears could very well be realized. If there's even a slight chance of this playing out this way, it does go to prove that it's entirely way too early for Heat fans to give up on this season.
There may come a time when the Heat will be able to give up on this season; we haven't reached that point just yet. And Simmons, of all people, has smartly just explained why.
