In the event that the Miami Heat miss out on Giannis Antetokounmpo (again), the door has officially opened for a pivot to Kawhi Leonard.

After an underwhelming season for the LA Clippers and their potential desire for a reset, the Heat could quickly emerge as a landing spot that makes a ton of sense for Kawhi. He would also qualify as a potential franchise-changing piece for the Heat this offseason.

Kawhi will have just one year left on his contract with the Clippers, and after whispers that LA held trade talks for him at the 2026 NBA Trade Deadline, it's almost a given that he is going to continue into the offseason. Or at least the opportunity will be there.

Kawhi Leonard and the Heat could be a perfect match

If Kawhi feels he's ready for change, you can almost bet that he will be traded at some point in the next few months. While the market for him could be vast, the Heat could make a lot of sense for both sides.

For Kawhi, the Heat could be a soft landing spot for the next chapter of his career. He'd get the red carpet and would be able to slide into a role that has suited him during his time in LA. For the Heat, Kawhi does give Miami that alpha superstar that they've been missing since Jimmy Butler left.

Even though Kawhi is probably past his prime at this stage of his career, he's still a very good player who could help be a piece that significantly alters the Heat's ceiling heading into next season. Plus, perhaps a change of scenery could help give him a strong second or third wind to this career.

The Heat could be willing to take on the risk

Would there be concerns about Kawhi's ability to remain healthy after the struggles he's faced over the last few years? Absolutely. However, Kawhi has quietly played 65-plus games in each of his last two seasons.

The Heat taking a flier on him, even if it is just for one season, may not be the disaster that some would fear it could be. In the event that the Heat are still looking to make a splash move if they were to miss out on Giannis, and a much cheaper Kawhi could make a ton of sense.

At the very least, the Kawhi situation in LA is certainly one the Heat will keep a close eye on. In theory, though, he does seem like a prototypical Heat trade target. And it does feel as if the opportunity just swung open for the Heat to snag him away from LA.
