Many Miami Heat fans were shocked when LeBron James elected to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers over the Miami Heat. However, Dwyane Wade may have quietly made the strongest case for why LeBron ended up making such a decision.
“From a basketball standpoint, I thought it was a very strategic move at this point in his career. It definitely gives him the best chance...I think Miami would have been a good move as well, but a lot of moving parts in that needed to go right."
Wade would also go on to hint that there may be more to LeBron's move than meets the eye. That remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see how this potential final decision before the end of his career plays out for LeBron.
It's certainly a big and bold move at this stage in LeBron's career. At the time, it didn't really make that much sense, but as the dominoes continue to fall, perhaps that is bound to change once the season begins.
The Heat were too much of a mystery for LeBron at this point in his career
At the heart of Wade's reasoning, it basically came down to this: The Heat were too much of a "what if" or mystery gamble at this stage of LeBron's career.
As LeBron prepares for his last one or two years in the league, winning a championship has to be at the forefront of his goals. While the Heat will certainly be in the conversation to do so, there were too many questions about their incomplete backcourt and lack of shooting for LeBron to feel that signing with the Heat would've given him the best chance to end his career with another championship.
Whether Heat fans agree with that assessment or not, that's pretty fair. And it'd be difficult to blame LeBron if that was indeed the final tipping point.
As Wade alluded to, there's probably much more that goes into such a big decision, but at least from a basketball point of view, that's a pretty objectively fair account of what went down for LeBron this summer.
Would LeBron signing with the Heat give them much more legitimacy and even more intrigue heading into this upcoming season? Absolutely. However, in the end, this is a move that could very well end up working out for both LeBron and the Heat.
After all, I'm not sure how the Heat would've been able to manage Giannis Antetokounmpo's first year alongside the circus that LeBron's signing in Miami would've brought too.
The Heat's front office would've taken it, but this is probably one of those things that may end up working out for the best.
