The Miami Heat's depth is what eventually overwhelmed the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night, as they finally snapped their five-game losing streak. It's that strength that the Heat should lean on heading into the stretch run.
Without elite talent or a consistent enough offense, it's their depth that could give the team the edge they're looking for as they gear up for a potential postseason run. Now that the Heat is finally healthy, this is a luxury that they'll be able to embrace more.
Erik Spoelstra can open up the rotation when the Heat are healthy
Erik Spoelstra leaned on his depth late in the game, especially when the Heat went cold on the offensive end of the floor. And, in the fourth quarter, the Heat's depth was too much for a Cavs team, playing on the second night of a back-to-back, to overcome.
In their big win over the Cavs, eight players scored in double figures for the Heat. Norman Powell led all scores with 19, but it was impossible for Cleveland to key on any one player defensively. That's what made the Heat so difficult to scheme against late in the game.
While it could be considered a bad thing in late-game situations that Miami doesn't have a clear-cut No. 1 option offensively, Spo needs to continue to make it work to their benefit (that they have so many threats).
That's the one competitive advantage that the Heat could strive to find against teams down the stretch. While that may be much more difficult to pull off in a playoff series, especially when the game slows down, you almost have to trust Spo to figure it out.
At this point, Heat fans have to live and die with their depth. For better or worse, it's their one big strength of the team, especially when they're healthy.
In a fight for the 6th seed
The final push for the playoffs is here, and the Heat find themselves in the 8th seed with less than 10 games to play. Another win over Cleveland in a rematch scheduled for Friday could really be the springboard that the Heat needs down the stretch.
After another game against the Cavs, the Heat's schedule does soften up a bit. And if they're going to find a way to clinch a top 6 seed in the Eastern Conference, they're going to need to get every win they can get.
On paper, it may seem like a tall task to snag another win over Cleveland. However, if the Heat were able to pull it off, it'd be house money as they prepare for a huge three-game homestand.
The good news is that the Heat looked good for the first time in a long while at full healthy Wednesday night. And, just maybe, Spo may have found a formula that could lead to replicated success for the Heat. One that is built around using their depth to its advantage.
