It’s time. The Giannis Antetokounmpo-Miami Heat era is about to begin. The Heat made a monster trade for Antetokounmpo this summer, and it’s almost time for that deal to start paying off. Miami played its first preseason game on October 3, and there have been plenty of media interviews to get fans excited. And Antetokounmpo has already made a promise. A championship promise.

During an interview with WPLG Local 10 News, Antetokounmpo said that “it’s going to happen.” He said that it’s going to take time, but that he will win a championship in Miami. He’s going to bring a banner to South Beach. But that’s quite a lofty promise to make, especially considering how talented the rest of the league has gotten.

The Eastern Conference has been loading up. And with the West already looking like a powerhouse, winning a title won’t be easy for Antetokounmpo and the Heat.

Giannis just promised the Heat a championship

Obviously, what else is Antetokounmpo supposed to say? We’re going to try. Eh, maybe we’ll win one. We are going to do everything we can to win a championship here in Miami.

All of those things are probably true. It’s much more likely that one of those realities comes true than a guaranteed championship. And obviously the Heat are going to try. They’re going to do everything in their power to win a title.

But that’s not what Heat fans want to hear. They don’t want to hear about how hard the Heat are going to try to win. How hard they’re going to play on the court. How hard it’s going to be to win.

No. They want to hear confidence. They want to hear Antetokounmpo talk about how he is going to lead the Heat to a championship in Miami. How he’s going to bring gold back to the city.

Anything short of that would be a disappointment. But it’s still a lofty promise to make. Just look at what LeBron James said. “Not one, not two, not three…”

Well, it was two. And that was enough, but still. The statement didn’t end up coming true. That could be the case with Antetokounmpo this time around, and in all honesty, it’s probably the likeliest outcome.

Not because the Heat aren’t good enough to win a title – they are. But realistically speaking, they are playing in the toughest era to win a title.

No repeat champions in eight years. No repeat Finals appearances in that time, either. It’s going to be hard. But Antetokounmpo promised a title.
