Grading the disappointing debut of the Miami Heat's new-look starting lineup

That was embarrassing.

On a night when Pat Riley was honored with many franchise legends in attendance such as Dwyane Wade, the Miami Heat were humiliated by the Orlando Magic, 116-97, Wednesday night on Pat Riley Court at Kaseya Center.

The Heat trailed 58-54 at halftime, and instead of starting the second half motivated and locked in after Riley's speech and stories about Heat greats, Miami came out lethargic offensively which led to the Magic getting whatever they wanted offensively. And in the blink of an eye, the Heat found themselves trailing by as many as 32 points. The game was over before the fourth quarter even began.

The starters deserve an F grade for their display on both ends of the court.

In the early portions of the game, the Heat had their very few bright spots in the transition game with Nikola Jovic scoring some easy layups and Jimmy Butler having a rim-rocking dunk with the lob from Tyler Herro which happened to be Butler's only field goal of the game. Herro had a very strong start to the game as well, scoring 14 first half points and made five of his first six shots.

Miami was getting productive play from their backcourt in the first half, but not a lot of action was being ran for Adebayo and Butler, who combined for only two field goals the entire game. There were instances where Adebayo and Butler were spotting up for three instead of being involved in an offensive set, which can't happen often with your two best players.

By the time the second half rolled around, the defensive intensity from Orlando was too much to handle for Miami as the Magic forced turnovers with their constant ball pressure with the Heat having no answers besides trying to catch up with the three ball.

This ended up bleeding into the defense, which looked nothing like what was put forth in the preseason where Miami was forcing multiple turnovers with their constant activity when it came to playing the passing lanes and swiping the ball on drives.

The Magic put the Heat in uncomfortable positions with Paolo Banchero handling the ball and involving the Heat's guards in the pick and roll. Miami was forced to load up in the paint and ultimately led to the Magic making the Heat pay from downtown as Orlando buried 18 three pointers. Miami's effort on the defensive glass was also shameful, with the Magic recording a whopping 18 offensive rebounds leading to a plethora of second-chance opportunities which burned the Heat.

It would be easy to just chalk the Heat's opening night defeat as just one loss, but the Heat struggled to beat teams with a winning record last season, and in their first matchup against a playoff team in the Orlando Magic, the Heat were blitzed on their home court.

Heat Nation was very disappointed after last season. And with messages from Jimmy Butler wanting to contribute to winning basketball and Erik Spoelstra telling reporters that the team "is about it", the Heat should proved those words to be true on opening night.

Instead, Miami put together a failed performance and were punked by their in-state rivals.
