The Miami Heat could steal Ja Morant for pennies on the dollar in a trade if they wanted to. Now that he's officially on the trade block, the opportunity is certainly there for the Heat to land the superstar talent that they've desperately needed.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Memphis Grizzlies are finally "entertaining offers" to move on from Morant. Per Shams, there are multiple teams that are interested.
It remains to be seen if the Heat are among the group of teams that have expressed interest, but this could present the team with the best shot to land a star talent at a discounted price. Even though the Grizzlies are prioritizing draft capital and young players in any deal for Morant, there's no guarantee they're going to get that.
As we saw with Trae Young a couple of days ago, the trade market isn't what it used to be for star players, much less for those who have fallen into some misfortune.
With a couple of years left on his current contract, I wouldn't say Morant's trade value is as "bad" a place as Young's was, but it can't be considered significantly better.
If there's a path in which the Heat can land Morant for a fraction of the price it should cost, this is certainly an avenue that Miami should pursue.
Ja Morant represents the superstar talent the Heat have needed
Even though Morant's reputation has taken a hit over the last couple of years, he's the type of talent that the Heat should be willing to take a gamble on. And as Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to play the "will he or won't he" game with the media, why shouldn't the Heat be willing to take such a swing?
In theory, Morant is a player who should fit in with this Heat team. He'd certainly make life a lot easier on the offensive end of the floor for players like Bam Adebayo and Kel'el Ware.
Whether he could get back to that level of player remains to be seen, but he's already shown to have the potential to be an All-NBA type of player.
As one of the best reclamation organizations in the league, the Heat should feel confident about their system and their ability to get the most out of Morant.
In a new system and environment, there's reason to believe that this type of change of scenery could be exactly what Morant needs at this point in his career. For a team that desperately needs a talent upgrade, the Heat should be all over this possibility.
The question is, will the asking price and trade market match up with what the Heat would be willing to give up in such a deal?
