The Miami Heat gave up nearly every asset at their disposal to land Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer. A move that did draw some criticism this offseason, it's one that much of the fan base would come to agree with.
And if the front office had the opportunity to do it all over again now, I'd imagine they would. Without hesitation.
However, the team is certainly hoping that the Giannis and Bam Adebayo duo clicks right away. Considering how much they gave up for Giannis, they can't really afford for there to be a long adjustment period between their two superstars.
Bam and Giannis must click right away for the Heat to have any chance in the East
Even if there are some concerns about the supporting pieces around Giannis and Bam, that's perfectly fine. In fact, I'd say that is expected. The Heat's roster is far from perfect. But if the Heat is going to have any shot to compete in the Eastern Conference this season, they need Giannis and Bam to click right away.
Especially with how competitive the East is expected to be, there can't be many, if any, hiccups for the Heat. That's why it's important for Miami to hit training camp at full speed. Looking across the league, there aren't many other teams that have as much catching up to do once camp starts as the Heat.
Because of all the new pieces that they're trying to mesh together, and so quickly, the Heat doesn't have much margin for error once things get up and running in a few weeks.
The last thing the Heat need is to move land and sea to acquire Giannis, and only to find themselves in the same position as they were in before - in the Play-In Tournament.
Even if that were to happen, I do suppose the Heat would still have a higher ceiling with Giannis, but that's not the heart behind moving everything for Giannis. That's not the goal. And, in fact, that would likely make the start of this era feel like a disappointment.
Giving up all their assets to be exactly where the team has been over the last few years would be a swift kick in the tail for the front office. No one outside the Heat's organization is expecting them to win a championship this season.
At the same time, being stuck right back in the Play-In Tournament would be considered an undeniable failure to start off the Giannis era. A big part in avoiding that would be a seamless fit between Giannis and Bam. At this point, the Heat certainly needs it. And right off the bat.
