After not drawing any luck at the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, the Miami Heat are pretty much forced into what many would consider an extremely risky offseason plan. It's officially Giannis Antetokounmpo or bust time for the Heat.
The Heat weren't gifted a top 4 pick, opening the door to a potential franchise-changing player. That means, if the Heat is going to improve significantly this summer, it has to come via trade. With Giannis as the clear priority for Miami.
With such a high-stakes approach, this is one offseason plan that many Heat fans just don't want to hear, nor is it a path the ywant to see Miami take. Because the honest truth is, there's a better chance than not that the Heat are going to end up empty-handed and in disappointment. Again.
Heat fans are growing tired of the Giannis chase
Even though the Heat's front office may like their team's chances in a pursuit of Giannis, most fans know pretty much how this is all going to end. And it'll be similar to how the Heat's pursuits for a star player have ended over the last handful of seasons.
Without the star, pleading to the fan base that they did everything in their power to get a deal done.
Honestly, there is some truth to that. But the bigger problem falls on the fact that the Heat's front office is putting itself at a disadvantage in all these negotiations because they refuse to embrace the new way of asset collection in the modern game.
Because of silly antiquated "commandments," the Heat refuses to sell off veteran players early. They don't believe in trading veterans for the sake of accumulating assets for the future. At the same time, they can't complain when they fall short of a bidding war because they don't have enough assets to outbid the competition.
And, more often than not, that's why their pursuits of star players just haven't worked of late.
Heat could be setting themselves up for failure
Heading into another bidding war for Giannis, one that is expected to be enormous, it's difficult for Heat fans to be anything but bullish. If other suspected suitors for Giannis are going to be all-in on a pursuit, the bottom line is that the Heat just doesn't have the assets to cement a deal.
They're going to get outbid, unless Giannis pushes for a trade to Miami (and only Miami) behind the scenes. Even then, as we saw with the Damian Lillard situation a few years ago, there's still no guarantee Milwaukee's front office will oblige under the same pressure. Portland didn't.
Because of that, there are many in the Heat's fan base who believe the franchise is just setting itself up for disappointment. Nevertheless, that's the risky gamble the Heat feels they've been forced into.
Unless the Heat can buck the NBA Draft trend and find a franchise-changing star with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, it's hard to envision how the Heat is going to make a significant leap up the Eastern Conference standings without a cosmic trade.
The Heat knows that. And that's why this summer is Giannis or bust for the franchise, whether the fans are unanimously on board with that plan or not. It's a risky game that could leave this franchise worse off, whether they land Giannis or not.
