Everything the Miami Heat currently has on its roster simply isn't good enough. That doesn't mean they're devoid of talent, skill, potential, or even very good players; it just means that collectively it's not enough, and everyone in and outside Miami knows it.
For these reasons, the Heat are expected to chase after a big fish this summer, and the number of articles linking them to Giannis Antetokounmpo is tiring and redundant, yet completely relevant. Because if the Milwaukee Bucks do trade their superstar, the Heat are one of the likeliest options, and everyone knows the Heat are going to take another swing.
That said, Antetokounmpo is a superstar, but the Heat may need more than that, or someone less than that, someone with a different and lesser role, but who could be perfect for Miami given the way he plays and his potential fit, and he will likely test the free agent market this summer.
Coby White could be an upgrade for the Heat in the backcourt
Colby White is set to be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NBA career, and there's no doubt that he will have his options. White, while a role player, is electric and can shoot teams out of the building on any given night.Â
White is also an excellent guard who can not only shoot but also carry the ball up and handle it with ease. The Charlotte Hornets reportedly want him back next season, but White will be able to survey the land and choose his next destination this offseason. The Heat should be doing everything they can to persuade White to look their way.
White is instant offense as a role player, and he has every ability to create his own shot, as was evident during his Chicago Bulls tenure. His offensive game is multi-talented, and aside from Tyler Herro (who could be gone from Miami next season), the Heat don't have a player who can do what White can.
Coby White would be a great role player for the Heat
White is also the perfect flex player; he's comfortable taking the lead on offense, but he’s also comfortable spacing the floor and drawing defenders to him with his deep threat presence, while giving teammates more space to operate. Again, Miami doesn’t have a player like this.Â
White is everything you would want in an offensive spark plug, and even though the Heat will be superstar shopping this summer, they can't afford to ignore the smaller pieces that fit with their team along the way. White's versatility makes him dangerous on the floor, and his high IQ would give Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra someone to trust in any situation.
White won't be the only point guard hitting the market; Colin Sexton, Fred VanVleet, and Gabe Vincent are also heading into free agency, but given VanVleet's expected move to decline his player option with the Houston Rockets only to return on a new deal, that leaves Sexton, Vincent, and White as three viable options for the Heat.Â
Of those three, White is the much better option, and he has much more to offer. If the Heat want to inject some offense and energy into their roster, White has to be considered.Â
