After an offseason for the record books, the Miami Heat are riding quite a high heading into the 2026-27 NBA season, and understandably so. However, one Heat insider just hinted that a huge organizational change may be closer than most fans realize.
Speaking about Heat's future, Ira Winderman hinted at the idea that he could see Erik Spoelstra walk away from coaching in 2028. Winderman's thoughts revolved around the idea that Spo could move into a front-office role for Miami, rather than a full-blown retirement away from the game.
"When you talk about the Heat turnaround, after the 2028 Los Angeles games, to me, would be the natural time for Spo to maybe move to the front office to step back.
Right now, I know he loved it. It would make sense. But who knows? Maybe he's one of those coaching lifers. Maybe he's Hubie, and he's going to come back, you know, in a different way and keep doing that, just like I think Pat Riley will never fade away."
Erik Spoelstra seems rejuvenated after the Heat's move for Giannis
At least for now, this just doesn't seem very likely to happen. Especially after the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, Spoelstra does seem rejuvenated and excited for the start of a new Heat era.
But, in theory, you'd imagine that a lot can change in a few years. And that's what Winderman is likely speaking to most. It's not that Spoelstra is plotting his exit from the bench or coaching, but that, if he wanted, the timeline for when he would get that first opportunity to do so would be in a few seasons.
If the Giannis experiment doesn't go as planned for the Heat, or is cut short for whatever reason, and the franchise finds itself back at a crossroads, it wouldn't be that shocking if Spoelstra used that opportunity to embrace a role shift.
Plus, there's the big elephant in the Heat's front office surrounding the future with Pat Riley. At 81 years old, it's impossible to predict what Riley's future is going to be with the Heat. It doesn't appear that he has any interest in slowing down, but especially at his age, that can change at any given moment.
And, at least to a certain extent, there's reason to believe that if there is a change coming with Riley in the front office, Spoelstra will be involved one way or another.
So what is at the heart of this speculation from Winderman? Well, it's tough to say. However, it should, at the very least, open Heat fans to the idea of Spoelstra eventually leaving the coaching bench (if he wants). It's a scenario that fans should at least be wise to.
