The Miami Heat nearly traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo at this past year's NBA Trade Deadline, and it's not just wishful thinking. A latest report from ESPN's Shams Charania truly gives the Heat vindication for their Giannis pursuit that has since been much-criticized.
Per Shams, the Bucks "seriously considered" an offer for the Heat at the trade deadline. Ultimately, they decided against a move. However, it does seem that the Heat were 100 percent right in their stance to hold the Giannis line.
Even though it didn't end up working out for Miami, it now makes their trade deadline thinking that much more digestible.
The Heat almost pulled off a deal for Giannis
According to this report, the deal that nearly netted Giannis revolved around Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, multiple first-round picks, and pick swaps. Again, Milwaukee decided to take this situation heading into the offseason with one of two results.
Either Giannis will change his mind and be more open to signing a long-term deal with the Bucks, or they will get a better offer during the summer.
Despite falling short of landing Giannis at the deadline, the Heat should still feel at least some sense of confidence heading into the summer. Even though there could be other suitors that emerge this summer for Giannis, the fact that they came close should give them somewhat of a step up for another pursuit in a few months.
It may be Giannis or bust for the Heat
While there may be other potential targets, the Heat will be entering this offseason with a Giannis or bust approach. For better or worse, the Heat's immediate future greatly revolves around the Giannis front.
This doesn't mean that the Heat doesn't have a plan B in place, but it does give the impression that they won't pivot until it becomes crystal clear that their Giannis pipe dream isn't happening.
Because of how good Giannis is, that's probably the right call for the Heat.
They were close, they could feel it. Assuming this report is accurate, that's only going to help drive this front office heading into the offseason.
Pat Riley knows what's at stake this summer. After a few years of mediocrity, the Heat needs to strike. It needs a big move. And Giannis could be right there for the taking.
The Heat nearly landed him a couple of months ago. They'll have another shot soon. Can they close this time around? That's the big question.
