The Miami Heat are sending so many mixed messages so far this offseason. One day, it appears they're all-in about building a win-now team (pursuing Kevin Durant), the next, they are posturing like a team willing to embrace a youth movement (drafting Kasparas Jakucionis). Then, there are moments, like the opening hours of free agency, in which the team is looking to run it back.
According to recent reporting, the Heat has bypassed the option of pursuing Jonathan Kuminga in restricted free agency. At least for now, Miami may not have anything lined up to shake up their roster with free agency in full swing.
If the last week and a half is any indication, the Heat has failed to pick a path forward, and, at this point, their unseriousness about reshuffling their roster (one way or another) is quite laughable. And it has to be incredibly frustrating for the fan base.
The Heat may not have many options left
Realistically speaking, even if the Heat did want to make a move to shake up their roster, they may not have many options left - especially if they're not willing to explore a potential market for Kuminga, who the team has been linked to recently.
At best, maybe the Heat is able to re-sign Duncan Robinson. And even then, that's something that would leave much to be desired. To be perfectly honest, with how the Heat's roster is currently constructed, they probably shouldn't be re-signing Robinson.
Aside from that potential move, I suppose a trade is the next most likely outcome for the Heat heading into the remainder of the offseason. Without any really big names on the open market at the moment, it's hard to envision the Heat making a significant move that would move the needle much.
Right now, the Heat is on pace to have roughly the same roster as they did last year. After the strong words about change that Pat Riley delivered during his end-of-the-season press conference, the Heat's front office has to feel awfully silly right now. And if they don't, then perhaps there's an even bigger problem than many fans realize.
