Everything is in place for Davion Mitchell to have the best season of his career thus far with the Miami Heat. Perhaps most importantly, he'll finally get a fair opportunity to emerge as the full-time starting point guard for the Heat, something that every young player dreams about when they make the jump to the Association.
Throughout the first few years of his career, Mitchell has gotten some sparse starts. However, he's never really had the chance to be the everyday starter. That will change heading into the start of training camp.
Assuming that the Heat will want to stagger Norman Powell and Tyler Herro, probably bringing the former off the bench, that will naturally open up a spot for Mitchell to emerge as the starting point guard. If he shows enough in training camp and pre-season, it's going to be difficult for Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra not to give Mitchell a fair shake to be the full-time starter next to Herro this season.
Davion Mitchell is in the perfect place
From a pure fit standpoint, there may not be a better organization in the league for Mitchell than the Heat. Since he was acquired last season, it's been clear that he has seemingly found a new home. His toughness, grittiness, and constant hustle fit perfectly with the Heat.
It's part of the reason why Mitchell closed the season as one of the team's best players down the stretch.
Even as the team was outclassed by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs, Mitchell was one of the bright spots for the team. If he can continue to build off that finish to the season, he should be able to earn a starting spot this season.
After the Heat signed him to a contract extension this past offseason, it's clear how much Miami values him. Now it's time for Mitchell to repay the favor by taking another step forward in his development.
If Mitchell can show more growth this season as a playmaker, and if he can continue to consistently hit the 3-point shot, he could quietly evolve into the point guard that the Heat have been missing all these years.
Miami knows the relentless effort they're going to get from Mitchell on the defensive end of the floor. If he can continue to grow offensively, he could help raise the Heat's ceiling this year as well.
Mitchell has a golden opportunity on his hands heading into training camp. It's time for him to take full advantage of the opportunity. At least in my mind, there's no reason why Mitchell shouldn't emerge as the primary starting point guard for the team this season. It'd be a huge accomplishment for how shaky of a start Mitchell had to his NBA career.
