Heat-Nuggets preview: Key matchup, projected lineups, how to watch
By Wes Goldberg
The Miami Heat are still searching for their first win over a team with a winning record this season, and they’ll go to Denver to try against the 5-3 Nuggets on Friday night.
After a slow start, the Nuggets have won three straight, including knocking off the then-undefeated Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. That same night, the Heat squandered a 15-point lead on the road against the Phoenix Suns, but they’ll hope to build on the more impressive moments of that game.
Key matchup: Bam Adebayo vs Nikola Jokic
It’s been a rough start for Adebayo, who is averaging career lows in points (14.9), shooting percentage (39.8%) and rebounds (9) since becoming a full-time starter. Meanwhile, Jokic is still playing at his usual MVP level. It will be the toughest test Adebayo has faced this season.
This is a matchup both players know well. Adebayo has the strength to body up with Jokic, but Jokic’s tough and passing can break any defense – including Miami’s 14th-ranked outfit.
Can Adebayo test Jokic on the other end? Jokic is playing nearly 40 minutes a game for a thin Denver roster, so making him work early could be a good way to create an advantage later in the game.
Injury report
Denver’s Jamal Murray has been upgraded to questionable as he returns from concussion protocol, while Aaron Gordon is out with a right calf strain.
Projected lineups
If Murray is unavailable, Russell Westbrook will start in his place alongside Christian Braun, Michael Porter Jr., Peyton Watson and Jokic.
The Heat will start Terry Rozier, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler and Adebayo. Nikola Jovic has been the fifth starter in the first seven games, but coach Erik Spoelstra opened the second half against the Suns on Wednesday with Haywood Highsmith.
