Morale heading into the 2026-27 NBA season is at an all-time high for the Miami Heat. After the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, that's not all that surprising. But even though the Heat is expected to be better, the path toward securing a top-6 seed in the conference won't be simple.
As Miami looks to finally break out of four consecutive years in the NBA Play-In Tournament, the addition of Giannis is certainly a great first step. However, a good portion of the rest of the Eastern Conference improved, too. And that could further complicate things for the Heat.
At the top, there are teams that you know are going to be good in the East. These are teams that you can bet are going to give the Heat fits all year long in the standings. These teams are the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, and Boston Celtics.
Even if the Heat are elite right off the bat, these are teams that are going to factor in right alongside Miami.
The Heat could be in a fight to avoid the Play-In Tournament
But what about the surprise teams that could derail the Heat's first season with Giannis, perhaps even to the extent that they could be in a battle to fight their way out of a Play-In Tournament spot? These are the teams to focus on. These are the teams to watch.
As we inch closer to the start of training camp, let's explore five of these surprise teams that could make the Heat's path out of the Play-In Tournament that much more difficult.
Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers finished with one of the worst records in the league last season, but they'll welcome back Tyrese Haliburton, who missed all of last season with an Achilles injury. It's not a guarantee that the Pacers will be all the way back and compete for a top -6 seed in the East, but the last time Indiana was healthy, they did make a run to the NBA Finals.
At the very least, the Pacers should be on the Heat's radar.
Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic are another team that could be better this season compared to last year. Orlando was hit pretty hard by the injury bug last year. With better injury luck, there's reason to believe that the Magic could be in for a big season.
Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks seem to be a trendy, up-and-coming team that many NBA fans are starting to believe in. After closing last season on a high note, finishing with 46 wins, it wouldn't be shocking if Atlanta got closer to the 50-win mark this season.
If the Hawks do get to 48-50 wins, that could certainly make it much more difficult for the Heat to get out of the Play-In position.
Toronto Raptors
Does anyone really know what to expect from the Toronto Raptors this season? After trading for Kawhi Leonard, you'd imagine that the Raptors will take another step forward this year. They won 46 games last year and seemingly got better.
Of course, it all falls on the health of Kawhi. And I'm not sure how to project that forward.
Philadelphia 76ers
The national media has crowned the Philadelphia 76ers as the big winners of the offseason. And after adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, with a few other interesting bench pieces, this summer, that's hard to argue against.
The question is, will it all gel together? At least on paper, the 76ers have the potential to be a dangerous threat to the Heat.
