Pat Riley may be the face of the Miami Heat's front office, but it's quietly become quite clear that it's Nick Arison who holds the final say for big decisions. Now that this secret is quietly becoming more mainstream, it could change the perception, for better or worse, of Riley for the fan base.
As has been whispered sparingly over the last couple of years, it's Nick Arison, son of Heat owner Micky Arison, who holds the most influence and often makes the final decisions.
While it's not outlandish for a team owner to hold the final decision, the Heat have not necessarily been advertised as such. Riley has been the face of the front office since he arrived. He's been the godfather, the person this Heat organization has been built around.
When the Heat has done something good, he's gotten the praise. When they've messed up, he's taken the fall. But that may have been wrong all along.
Pat Riley has been a sacrificial lamb for the Heat
In many ways, especially of late, Riley has been somewhat of a sacrificial lamb for the Heat's front office. But now that the heat (no pun intended) has been turned up quite a bit, it's not fair for Riley or the fan base to continue down this road.
If Riley is not the one person in the front office with the most influence on the direction of the franchise, it certainly waters down his upcoming end-of-the-season press conference coming up on Monday.
In theory, Riley can say everything that the fan base wants to hear in his press conference, but if he doesn't have as much influence as perhaps he once did, what's the point of it? Last summer was the perfect example of that.
In his end-of-the-season press conference last year, Riley preached change and how this roster wasn't going to cut it. Interestingly enough, there was no big change, with the exception of Duncan Robinson and Kevin Love leaving, opening the door for a Norman Powell trade.
Riley preached a change that never came. Again, what's the point of Riley speaking if it isn't the one pulling the triggers behind the scenes?
To just fill the fan base with false hope? To try and save face and emerge as a shield for the real decision-makers in Miami? That just doesn't seem right. And it's not.
Especially considering that there's a group of the fan base that has villainized Riley for the Heat's lack of moves of late.
The pressure is on the Heat's front office
Heading into a do-or-die offseason, the pressure surrounding the front office has hit a fever pitch. And you can bet that if there are any missteps along the way, Riley will certainly be taking the PR hit. Or at least that's been the status quo.
But now that there's a little more transparency when it comes to the decision-making in Miami, it should absolutely change the way this offseason may unfold. And if the Heat emerge empty-handed from the summer again, it could spell a new dark era for the franchise.
Especially if the real decison-makers in Miami refuse to face the music.
If the Heat falter this offseason, it's not all on Riley. At this point, this revelatory bombshell could change everything about the perception of this front office this summer.
