One way or another, Miami Heat fans are going to find out a lot about the team's bold offseason plans after the NBA Draft Lottery. In many ways, their plans will be set in stone on that night.
If the Heat are lucky enough to move up in the lottery, it could change their level of aggressiveness when it comes to veteran superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard. But, if they stay at 13, you can almost bet it will be full-steam ahead in their hunt for a star player.
The big question, of course, revolves around how high the Heat would have to move in order for them to call off their pursuit of a star player. Honestly, that could be difficult to answer.
What if the Heat moves into the top 3 on lottery night?
Theoretically speaking, any trade for a superstar like Giannis or Kawhi is almost certainly going to cost the Heat the rights to their first-round selection in the 2026 NBA Draft. But if they manage to move into the top 3, it's going to be difficult for the front office to justify such a move.
At that point, the Heat should still be open to pursuing a star player, but up to a certain point.
And the line in the sand should be a top 3 selection. In what many are desribing to be a great NBA Draft class, the last thing the Heat needs to do is to trade away a top 3 selection. Especially considering how rare this opportunity is for the Heat franchise.
In a strong draft class, there's reason to believe they could find their next face of the franchise in this draft. And if they're so fortunate to move into the top 3, there's an argument to be made that the Heat may be better off pivoting away from a star pursuit.
Should the Heat pivot to a rebuild?
I'm not sure if they should pivot toward an all-out rebuilding of their roster if they were to move up in the draft lottery, but the argument can certainly be had.
The Heat might be better off going down that path than hoping to piece together a contender now, burning all of their available assets in the process.
It's a problem the Heat's front office would love to have, but one they shouldn't have to make a decision on just yet. But, in a few days, it could certainly be a real scenario.
For now, though, the Heat's odds are long. They're certainly stacked against them.
Nevertheless, the Heat's offseason plans are going to be revealed by what transpires this weekend at the NBA Draft Lottery. And, at least when it comes to an offseason approach, there's much that is going to become clear for Heat fans.
