The Miami Heat's path to Giannis Antetokounmpo just got that much harder now that Masai Ujiri has been hired by the Dallas Mavericks.
With this move, it's safe to assume that the Mavs could be a dangerous lingering threat to the Heat seeing their pipe dream trade for Giannis ever coming to fruition. Because of Ujiri's (reported) connection to Giannis, the Mavs could emerge as another strong landing spot for the superstar forward.
It is worth noting that Masai Ujiri has an incredibly strong bond and relationship with several players around the league, including Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard.

At least for now, the Mavs have not been specifically named as a plausible threat to trade for Giannis, but now that Ujiri is on board, they can't be counted out. While it's worth noting that Ujiri has a reported relationship with Giannis, the other part of this hiring that can't be ignored is that the Mavs don't make this move without the assumption that their front office is going to be much more aggressive moving forward.
And part of that renewed aggression could revolve around a pursuit for Giannis.
The Heat wouldn't want to see the Mavs enter the Giannis sweepstakes
That, more than anything, would be something that the Heat will not want to see. The Heat's odds at landing Giannis were going to be long even without an aggressive Mavs team on the hunt, but there's no question that Ujiri with a trove of assets at his disposal, could make things a whole lot more difficult for Miami.
Again, there's no guarantee that the Mavs will enter the Giannis sweepstakes this offseason, but if they want to secure a superstar to jump-start the rebuild around Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, kicking the tires on a Giannis pursuit could be one way to go.
In theory, Dallas could build a package around talented young center Dereck Lively II and future draft capital. The Mavs also have some expiring salary that could appease the Bucks in any deal for Giannis.
Add in Ujiri's relationship with Giannis, and there's an interesting path that could easily be found.
If Ujiri wants to make a splash during his first offseason with the Mavs, perhaps this is a possibility that he'd be much more willing to explore.
The Heat have difficult waters to navigate this summer
The Heat have to surely hope he won't. As is, the Heat were already going to have to navigate difficult waters. The more teams that enter the Giannis sweepstakes, the more that's only going to complicate things for Miami - on the Giannis front, and even beyond it.
If the Heat are going to have a successful offseason, they're going to need to have a measured plan of action. And they're going to need to execute quite quickly.
Unfortunately, that's often been one of the Heat's biggest issues of late. It's not necessarily that they haven't had bold plans; it's the fact that they've failed to execute on them, and then have faltered with ineffective backup plans.
That can't be the case this offseason.
Heading into the summer, the Heat needs to have a Giannis and a non-Giannis plan. Their ability to execute on both fronts will ultimately determine whether this will be a great offseason for the Heat or not.
Interestingly enough, especially after the hire of Ujiri, the Mavs can now play a factor in the Heat's dream offseason plans. And not necessarily in a good way.
