Donovan Mitchell is a Miami Heat dream trade target that would make much more sense for the team than Giannis Antetokounmpo. Interestingly enough, a path to Mitchell, even if ever so narrow, may be slowly emerging.

According to a recent report from NBA writer Fred Katz, the Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to explore trading Mitchell if he doesn't sign a contract extension with the team this offseason.

Mitchell will have one guaranteed year left on his contract after this season. He has the option to test unrestricted free agency in 2027 (if he opts out of the final year of his deal). However, in an attempt to avoid that scenario entirely, the Cavs could look to trade Mitchell if he isn't ready to sign a long-term extension with the team.

It's one possible scenario (one the Heat have dreamed of before) that could be an extremely intriguing non-Giannis target this offseason.

Donovan Mitchell would be a perfect fit for the Heat

In theory, Mitchell would represent a much better fit for the Heat than Giannis. Especially next to Bam Adebayo, Mitchell would be a more seamless fit than Giannis. Mitchell isn't necessarily a better player than Giannis, but he could offer a more-than-capable backup plan for the Heat this summer.

Mitchell checks a lot of the boxes of what this Heat team is currently missing. He's a great playmaker, is an alpha-level scorer on the offensive end, and he'd help make life a lot easier for Bam. He's also a great leader for the locker room.

Additionally, you'd expect a trade for Mitchell to cost the Heat less than what it would take to land Giannis. And that could be an underrated part of the entire equation.

Because if the Heat trade for Mitchell, while keeping some of their foundational core in place, it could help this team make the leap to championship contention quicker than expected.

What are the odds that Donovan Mitchell hits the trade block?

Of course, there's only one problem with that, and it's the fact that Mitchell hitting the trade block is just not that likely.

In a perfect world, the Heat would get a second chance to land their dream trade target. However, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Mitchell would leave the Cavs. He's been on record saying how he loves Cleveland and how he wants to be a part of the franchise as long as he can.

They also may be on the verge of a deep playoff run.

We've seen stranger things happen in the NBA, but it feels as if it's extremely unlikely for Mitchell to hit the trade block this offseason. Then again, I do suppose things can quickly change if Mitchell refuses to sign an extension this summer.

The Heat are sure hoping so.
