Much of the fan base was understandably upset with the Miami Heat's decision to stand pat at the NBA Trade Deadline once it became apparent that Giannis Antetokounmpo was not going to be traded. However, with the way things are currently trending, it does appear as if that risky trade deadline bet is starting to pay off for the Heat.
It may not have made much sense at the time, especially with the chance that they could lose both Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell for nothing this summer, but it's hard to argue with the recent results.
The Heat's front office bet on this roster making a run down the stretch, and decided that was more valuable than selling on a roster that may still not have been bad enough to secure a high lotter pick.
The Heat is starting to play its best ball of the season
And recently, it does seem as if that bet is beginning to look smarter and smarter.
Over the last 12 games, the Heat have the look of a team that could emerge as a dangerous threat in the Eastern Conference playoff field. During that span, the Heat is 9-3. Perhaps most importantly, their offense seems to have been ignited with new life.
Miami has a top 3 offense, a top 6 defense, and the second-best net rating in the league over the last 12 games. Now that the team is getting healthier and healthier, it seems as if things are beginning to click for the Heat.
And that should count for something.
How much of a threat can the Heat evolve into?
Over the last week-plus, the Heat has impressive wins over the star-studded Houston Rockets, the "hottest" team in the league (Charlotte Hornets), and the No. 1 seed in the East (Detroit Pistons). The Heat may not be considered a contender in the East, but there may be something brewing in Miami.
It's unlikely that this version of the Heat will be able to replicate the unexpected success of the 2023 team, which may take it all the way to the NBA Finals as a Play-In Tournament team. However, especially in a wide-open Eastern Conference, nothing can be considered completely off the table for a Heat team that is gaining traction.
And, just maybe, their decision to keep the band together at the NBA Trade Deadline may pay off in the end, something that not many expected after the narrative that developed around this team just a month ago.
