The Miami Heat should be absolutely disgusted with ESPN's recent Summer Forecast for the 2026-27 NBA season. In their Eastern Conference projections, ESPN projects the Heat to finish right back in the Play-In Tournament.
ESPN has the Heat finished 7th in the East, behind the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, and Atlanta Hawks. With all due respect to each of those teams, if the Heat do finish in the Play-In Tournament again, something has gone terribly wrong.
That's just not going to happen. If Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo remain relatively healthy throughout this season, it's hard to imagine that the Heat are going to be right back where they started. Back in the Play-In Tournament.
Giannis is worth well more than two extra wins for the Heat
ESPN has the Heat winning 45 games this season. If Giannis is only worth two extra wins for the Heat (compared to their 43 wins last season), ESPN needs to completely revamp the way they make projections. There's no world where Giannis is only worth two more wins for the Heat.
Sure, I understand many want to keep harping on the idea that the Heat gutted the roster for Giannis. But especially after the addition of Klay Thompson, there's a strong argument to be made that the Heat have done a pretty solid job of building out their first-year roster around Giannis.
Miami is not going to have as deep a roster as they had last season, nor as deep as some of the other contenders, but they're certainly going to have much more star power than a lot of the teams in the league. Ten out of 10 times, the Heat make that depth-for-superstar swap. You don't just fall into a Giannis.
The Heat (led by Giannis) are going to take the league by surprise
He's the type of talent that not only changes the culture for a team, but also changes the landscape of a league. Well, at least that's the way it's generally been. I guess, with the exception of the Heat.
When the Heat make a move, no, it won't change all that much. I just have a very hard time believing that.
The Eastern Conference may have improved, but to say that Giannis isn't going to make a big impact for the Heat this season is pretty outrageous. ESPN should be ashamed of itself.
Does the Heat have a perfect roster? Absolutely not. But they're not the seventh-best team in the Eastern Conference. If the prognosticators at ESPN genuinely believe that, they're going to be in for a massive surprise this season.
This is just another chip on the Heat's shoulder heading into the start of this upcoming season.
