The Miami Heat are attempting to call the Milwaukee Bucks' bluff in the most recent chapter of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga, but they should tread carefully. The last thing the Heat needs is to find themselves in a game of chicken with a Bucks team that has seemingly already lost.
Right now, what exactly do the Bucks have to lose? Little, if anything. If the rumors over the last few months are true, the Bucks have already lost Giannis. It's already over. Milwaukee, for better or worse, has already lost the best player in franchise history.
What? Are they risking burning the Heat's offer and having to settle for pennies on the dollar for Giannis? That's already happening. With all due respect, even the Heat's best offer is going to be considered short of equal value for Giannis.
So why should it matter if they "win" or "lose" this game of chicken? It won't. And that's why the Heat need to second-guess their tactic leading up to the 2026 NBA Draft.
The Bucks are unlikely to blink first
Over the last few days, it's been rumored that the Bucks are willing to take the Giannis trade saga into July and potentially further. Understandably, there's been an uproar from the Heat's media collection that is suggesting Milwaukee is bluffing and using this as potential leverage.
For a lot of reasons but mainly this one:

Why would the Bucks actively sabotage the only real offer they have if they don't think Giannis will extend? https://t.co/A2MXi4bnMU
The Bucks want pick currency in this draft. That’s the one thing everyone seems to agree on.

So now they’re willing to take it past the draft, after other teams have made picks and will move on to other business? pic.twitter.com/RwsGnOVVhu
Could ultimately come down to whether Buck owners (Jimmy Haslam, Wes Edens etc) can talk themselves into taking a Heat offer that has been available since what feels like the beginning of time https://t.co/dqzOwbPggV

While that's probably what's going on here, can the Heat take that risk? Do they have the luxury to call their bluff and play this game of chicken with the Bucks as we inch closer to the NBA Draft? I'd argue, no.
Just objectively, the Heat have much more to lose than the Bucks. Again, even if Milwaukee "wins" this game of chicken with Miami, they've already effectively lost.
And they know that. So, this is a team that could be embarking on a dangerous game of chicken with full understanding that they could - and very well may - lose in the end. It's unlikely that they would have a huge problem with that.
In fact, even some Bucks' fans are willing to go down with the ship at this point, too.
I’d rather not trade Giannis and risk he walks for nothing than accept the Heat package

Bucks are under no obligation to send Giannis to his preferred spot
Drag this out all summer, wait for better offers and put the extension in front of him, it’s likely he signs it https://t.co/Jw28YExalV
Does this mean the Heat should fold on every front right now? Absolutely not. However, what they need to understand is how dangerous this window is between now and the draft. The Heat need to close on Giannis. There's no other way to put it.
The front office knows it. The fan base knows it. The rest of the league knows it. And, unfortunately, so do the Bucks.
So maybe they shouldn't get too caught up in this game of chicken and work to find a common ground with the Bucks rather than playing hardball before they get burned. Again.
