After a fresh wave of Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors, the overwhelming belief is that the Miami Heat are still firmly in the driver's seat.
Whether the Heat will be able to close on a deal for Giannis or not remains to be seen, but they seem to be in a great spot heading into what many believe will be the final stretch before a trade eventually takes place.
In the words of NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Heat is the "real kind of team that I’m pinpointing for Giannis.” Hours later, Sam Amick added that the "noise surrounding the Heat and Antetokounmpo remains louder than the rest." He also added that many people around the league continue to believe that Giannis "will end up in Miami when this saga finally comes to an end."
None of this matters if the Heat can't close the deal
These are all strong confirmations from the public belief that has risen over the last couple of weeks, but none of this will matter in the end if Giannis is not traded to Miami. In fact, if Giannis isn't traded to the Heat for whatever reason, all this reporting will only make things that much worse for Heat fans.
The idea that the Heat are firmly in the driver's seat for Giannis at this moment just puts that much more pressure on the front office to get something done. Because if the Heat are genuinely in this position, and they end up missing out on Giannis, it's going to be difficult for them to bounce back.
It's hard to imagine how the front office would even begin to sell the next plan of action to the fan base. Especially considering how much they've been begging for some excitement and change over the last few years.
Heading into the final few weeks before the 2026 NBA Draft, this has to be what the Heat's front office is laser-focused on - the need to close on Giannis. And, sure, there's a big part of that that doesn't fall on the Heat's shoulders.
The big questions that remain for the Heat
After all, in order to get a deal done, it does take two to tango. Interestingly enough, in this situation, it will take three. The Milwaukee Bucks, the Heat, and Giannis.
But, again, all those seemingly have at least some desire to do so.
Giannis is clearly intrigued by the idea of playing for the Heat, and Miami clearly views the superstar forward as its next face of the franchise. The two very big questions that remain revolve around whether the Bucks are ready to trade Giannis and if the Heat's offer is one they'd be willing to take.
For better or worse, these will be answered over the course of the next few weeks. And, at least at this point, it does feel as if the Heat may be sitting on a winning hand. Time will ultimately tell, but the early indications for Miami are certainly promising.
