Even though Andrew Wiggins says he hasn't made a decision on whether he will opt into the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat, his recent comments do seem to point in that direction. If so, that will make the Heat's front office very happy.
In a recent interview, Wiggins stated that he loves being in Miami and that he's grown to appreciate the organization. It's the words of a player that may not be ready to leave just yet. Wiggins has until June 29 to make that decision.
And if he does end up opting into the final year of his contract with the Heat, it would almost certainly make the front office very happy. That's because Wiggins opting into the final year of his contract would give the Heat much more flexibility via trade.
Andrew Wiggins needs to play ball with the Heat
Heading into a massive offseason for the Heat, Wiggins could play a vital role for the franchise one way or another. Theoretically speaking, if Miami is going to have a successful offseason, there's reason to believe that Wiggins will have to be willing to play ball with the Heat.
Exercising his near $30 million option for the 2026-27 NBA season would be a great first shoe to drop for the Heat this summer. Not only would the Heat have retained a strong trade asset to use this summer, but his expiring contract also makes it much easier for the team to put together unique trade offers on the table.
This decision from Wiggins would also eliminate the chance that the Heat would lose him for nothing this offseason.
As the Heat prepares a potential pursuit of a star player, it's pretty obvious that Wiggins' contract could end up emerging as a huge asset in those possibilities.
This doesn't mean that Wiggins is guaranteed to be traded if he opts into the final year of his contract with the Heat, but it does give the franchise another possible path to a big move.
The perfect Wiggins scenario for the Heat
In a perfect world, the Heat would be able to acquire a star player while also retaining Wiggins, who would be considered an elite-level supporting cast player. However, that's very unlikely to happen.
Because if the Heat is going to land a star player, it's going to cost nearly every asset that they have to offer. And Wiggins, on an expiring contract, would be described as one of the team's most enticing assets on the roster.
Wiggins still has a bit of a decision to make, one that will have a huge impact on the Heat's offseason outlook. But, at least for now, it does seem as if Wiggins is going to opt into the final year of his contract and make the Heat's front office very happy.
