Jimmy Butler guided one of the great eras in Miami Heat history. Now it seems to all be going up in smoke.

May 6th, 2024: Pat Riley says Jimmy Butler should keep his MOUTH SHUT

After Jimmy Butler sprained his MCL during the Heat’s play-in loss to the 76ers, he would go on to miss the following play-in game against Chicago and Miami’s first-round series against the Boston Celtics. Following the Heat’s first-round loss to the Celtics, a video circled around on social media where Butler claimed that “If I was playing, Boston would be at home, New York damn sure would be at home. Josh Hart? C’mon man.” In response at his end-of-season press conference, Pat Riley took a shot back at Jimmy, claiming that “If you’re not on the court playing… you should keep your mouth shut.” Considering Jimmy missed 22 games, following a season where he missed 18, Riley had a fair point, but it sparked the tension that would lead to the downward spiral of Butler and Riley’s relationship.

June 26th, 2024: Butler and the Heat don't agree on an extension

Shams Charania reported that Jimmy Butler would not sign an extension with the Heat but rather wait it out and test free agency in 2025. Miami and Butler were not close during contract talks as Butler and his camp thought that he was deserving of a max contract after leading the Heat to the finals in two of his first five seasons, while Riley believed that at 35, it would not be worth it “... to commit those kinds of resources unless you have somebody who’s going to be there and available every single night.” At this time, despite Riley’s comments and failed contract talks, Butler was still all-in on trying to remain a part of the organization.

September 30th, 2024 Media Day: Butler wants to focus on the season ahead

In recent years, Jimmy Butler has been the undisputed troll of media day. In 2022, it was the dreads, and on last season’s media day, the internet was buzzing about the “emo Jimmy” look. This season was different; Butler came with normal hair and no shenanigans, denying any trade drama and saying he was focused and ready “to go and hoop.” This was a positive sign for Heat fans, considering everything that went down in the offseason, and it gave hope that with Jimmy playing well in his contract year, the Heat could make one last postseason run with their star.

December 10th, 2024: The Heat are open to listening to offers for Butler

Fast-forward three months, and everything seemed to cool down for the most part. Then, just days after the Heat picked up their best win of the season against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Shams reports that Miami is open to trading Butler and that Butler has preferred destinations, including the Rockets, Warriors, Mavericks, and Suns. Shortly after, Butler’s agent, Burnie Lee, would go on Twitter and decline these reports. Shams would respond after claiming that he “1000% stands by his reporting.” Despite the dispute between Lee and Charania, the report still emphasized that Miami was looking at options, and it was not Butler wanting to leave Miami. However, it did start making fans wonder if Butler’s time in Miami was nearing an end.

December 26th, 2024: Pat Riley issues a statement saying they are not trading Butler

Just hours before the Heat played in Orlando the day after Christmas, Heat president Pat Riley released a statement saying that the Butler trade rumors became a distraction for the team and made it clear that “We are not trading Jimmy Butler.” After another report by Shams on the day prior that Butler “prefers” a trade out of Miami, Riley had enough and wanted to shut down all the trade talks. Once again, in Charania’s latest report, he claimed that Butler had still not requested a trade from Miami. However, it was pretty unusual that during this period, after Butler rolled his ankle in a loss to the Thunder on December 20th, he missed 13 days because he was sick and had to “return to competition reconditioning.”

December 31st, 2024: Butler says he’s uncertain if he wants to remain in Miami anymore

January 1st, 2025: Heat accuse Butler of not playing his hardest in return against the Pelicans

In his first game back after his five-game absence, Butler, a day after saying he was uncertain he wanted to remain in Miami, had his most unusual performance of the season against the Pelicans. Playing 25 minutes while only taking five shots and finishing with nine points. For most of the game, Butler was standing in the corner, and whenever he got the ball moments later, it felt like the ball was out of his hands. One particular shot, a one-legged three, got people wondering if Butler was giving it his all on the court or sending a message. Heat officials, following the win, accused Butler of not playing his hardest, and that was the last straw for Jimmy.

January 2nd, 2025: Butler requests a trade

After a second-consecutive single-digit performance, this time in a blowout loss to the Pacers where Butler did not play in the 4th quarter again. Following the loss to the Pacers, Butler explained how he lost joy for basketball. Then, asked if he could find it in Miami, Jimmy responded, “Probably not.” Moments later, the news broke that Butler requested a trade and wanted to be “anywhere but Miami.” Now, for both sides, there is no going back.

January 3rd, 2025: Butler gets suspended and Miami makes another statement

Following Butler’s trade request, Miami has suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games due to instances of conduct detrimental to the team throughout the season. The Heat also released a statement that they “will listen to offers” since Butler has now requested a trade. Miami also mentioned that “through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team.”

Where are we now?

After suspending Butler for seven games, the front office will most likely find a trading partner before that suspension ends; as with all that has happened, it seems highly unlikely Butler will step on the court for the Heat again this season. January 2nd’s loss to the Pacers will most likely be the last game we will ever see Jimmy Butler in a Heat uniform. Miami will look to get younger while maintaining a team that can compete in the East. Time will tell what Miami will do, as it would be shocking not to hear something before February 6th’s trade deadline, but what a terrible ending for what seemed to be the perfect fit between Butler and Heat Culture.
