Ryan Conwell hasn't played a minute for the Miami Heat, but it sounds like he's already fitting in with the team.
During a viral social media challenge, Conwell was asked where "Let's Go Heat" chants sounded the best. His answer was exactly what you'd expect to hear from a veteran Heat player. "Boston" was what Conwell uttered.
Feeding into the Celtics-Heat rivalry, this is exactly what you would expect from most Heat players. The fact that Conwell hasn't even experienced the rivalry yet and is already feeding into it says everything you need to know about the young wing.
Even though he's not expected to play much right off the bat for the Heat, there's reason to believe that there's a lot of promise with Conwell. And if this recent development is any indication, that's going to be the case both on and off the court.
Ryan Conwell could play a dark horse role for the Heat this season
As a second-round pick, Conwell is naturally considered somewhat of an afterthought in Miami. However, there's certainly a role for him to play in the right situation and circumstances. Considering the depth concerns that the Heat are likely to face all season long, even after the (somewhat surprising) signing of Klay Thompson, Conwell could quickly emerge as a useful player for Miami.
With the need for another ball-handler, if Conwell can develop quickly and improve his playmaking to at least a certain extent, there's a scenario in which he could move into a rotation piece for the Heat by the end of the season.
After all, he did have an impressive showing in the NBA Summer League. So impressive that the Heat elected to cut his stint short. Miami decided to shut Conwell down early in the Summer League to lower the risk of a potential injury.
It may be a bit too much of an ask to bid Conwell to develop quickly enough to contribute in year one, but we've seen more impressive things pulled off by this team's developmental team.
In fact, the Heat just need to look back a few years, when Pelle Larsson, a fellow second-round pick, showed enough promise to get some real run by the end of his rookie campaign. It's difficult to say whether Conwell can be that level of find by the Heat, but there is some precedent there.
Either way, Conwell seems to be fitting in perfectly with the Heat. And if his play can back up the way he talks, there's reaso nto believe that the Heat may have found another hidden gem in the second round.
