In the initial story about his trade request, Jimmy Butler was reportedly open to playing “anywhere but Miami.”

Well, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Memphis Grizzlies have been informed not to trade for Butler. Shortly after, Yahoo’s Kevin O’Connor reported that the Milwaukee Bucks were told the same.

The Grizzlies and Bucks have been informed not to trade for Jimmy Butler.

Over the last few days, the Grizzlies had emerged as a likely landing spot for Butler according to sportsbooks.

The Bucks reportedly held discussions about trading for Butler, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7.

One can speculate as to why these reports surfaced now: The Heat may have been engaged in trade conversations with the Grizzlies and Bucks. If Butler’s camp got word of those discussions, this is a way for Butler to wield some influence in where he ends up.

Because Butler can opt out of his contract and enter free agency this summer, he does have some leverage in trade talks between the Heat and other organizations. Those potential suitors have also seen in recent days how Butler can make things uncomfortable for his current team.

According to ESPN, Butler’s preferred destinations include the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors. It’s difficult for the Mavericks to build the framework of a deal, and the Rockets have expressed an unwillingness to trade for Butler. The Athletic reported last weekend that the Warriors have backed off their Butler interest.

The Suns remain motivated to acquire Butler and appear ready to offer him a maximum extension, but they need to find a third team to take on Bradley Beal’s contract to facilitate a trade. Beal is owed $110 million over the next two seasons and holds a no-trade clause, making matters even more complicated.
