If the Miami Heat are laser-focused on adding a veteran guard to their backcourt rotation before the start of the season, there's reason to believe that John Konchar could be their best option for accomplishing that.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Heat are one of a few teams that have expressed interest in Konchar. With less than two weeks before the start of training camp, a decision is expected soon - from both interested teams and Konchar.
If the Heat is going to add a veteran guard soon, you'd have to imagine that Konchar is pretty high, if not at the top, of their list of possibilities.
Why John Konchar makes sense as a final Heat move
Even though many expected the Heat to show at least some interest in Devin Carter, it's understandable why they passed. The same could be said about the speculation surrounding a potential Ben Simmons signing. However, Konchar would give the Heat a more stable option than either of those players.
No, Konchar isn't the best 3-point shooter or a player with a ceiling as high as Carter or Simmons, but he does offer a consistent veteran presence that neither of those players does.
Carter still needs time to fully develop, and there's no guarantee Simmons will be able to stay healthy or get back to his former self after a full season away from the league. Konchar is what he is at this point in his career.
And what he is may be exactly what the Heat needs as a backup behind Davion Mitchell.
John Konchar fits the Heat mold of a backup guard
Konchar knows his role and will be able to play it to a T under Erik Spoelstra and alongside this talented roster. He wouldn't be asked to do too much and would just need to act as a ball-handler who could help set up the offense.
Konchar would be able to come in and be a glue guy off the bench. He'd do all the dirty work that most other players don't want to do. He's a great rebounder for his position and is a stingy defensive player. He doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective, and has a skill set that would seamlessly fit on any team. If that doesn't scream Heat DNA, I'm not sure what does.
Is the signing of Konchar the type of move that's going to significantly raise the ceiling for the Heat this season? Probably not. However, it is the type of underrated move that could give this Heat team just enough depth in the backcourt to get by (for now).
