Klay Thompson didn't sign with the Miami Heat to get his retirement started early. He's ready for a new challenge, a new opportunity, and, apparently, is looking to set new records.
During his first day with the Heat, Thompson was already asking what the single-season record for 3-point makes was. Whether this was intentional or not, it seems as though he just set a high bar for himself heading into his first season with the Heat.
Klay Thompson's expectations may be through the roof
Fans will see this, and the expectations will continue to rise for Thompson. And, to be perfectly honest, it's not even something he would shy away from. That's not his personality. He's going to embrace it. Thompson is one of the most competitive players in the league, and he makes that pretty clear.
Despite the strong words, this is not surprising at all. Thompson is going to embrace this new opportunity with Miami. After all, it's not every day that a player gets to play next to two players as talented as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Thompson knows that and the possibilities that could come with it. Thompson is not going to guarantee breaking a Heat record this season, but that should be the goal. There's no denying that.
Klay Thompson will be in position for a huge bounce-back season
As has been said before, and something I anticipate will be stated time and time again before the start of this season, there may not be a better spot in the league than the Heat for Thompson. The fit is immaculate, and he has a chance to have a truly special year.
Many who watched Thompson last season with the Dallas Mavericks will say that he's done. And if not done, he's absolutely on the way down.
But that's only a partial truth. The fit with the Mavs last year wasn't great. They were an extremely young team that wasn't playing for much. The immense pressure on Thompson every night was too much for him at this stage of his career.
That won't be an issue with the Heat. And that's part of the reason why many believe they're a great spot for him to have a career resurgence. At the very least, Thompson is in a perfect position to have a bounce-back season.
If Thompson does have anything left in the tank, and there's reason to believe that he does, the Heat are the ideal team to get the most out of him.
Does that mean Thompson will break the single-season 3-point team record for the Heat? Not necessarily, but I'm sure both sides are hoping for that type of season from one of the best long-range shooters in NBA history.
