As the Miami Heat prepare for the start of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, there's reason to believe that they just need one opening to seriously be considered as a contender in the Eastern Conference. And the New York Knicks' impending salary cap issues could offer the Heat exactly that.
Multiple reports indicate that contract extension talks between the Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns could already be breaking down. With just one guaranteed year left on his contract, that would be a significant development in New York's attempt to keep its championship core together.
Add in the fact that Josh Hart is also currently eligible for a contract extension now, and that both Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby are extension-eligible next summer, and, all of a sudden, the Knicks' future gets that much more complicated.
The Heat could benefit from the Knicks' financial uncertainty
Because of the second apron restrictions, it'd be foolish to think that New York will be able to keep its entire core intact over the next couple of seasons. Assuming that does end up being the case, there could be an opening for a new-look team like the Heat to dethrone the Knicks as the top team in the conference.
For Giannis and the Heat, that may be the opening they need.
It's difficult (and unfair) to predict how things will shake out for the Knicks over the next season or two, but if they take any type of step back (for whatever reason), it will absolutely help the Heat in their pursuit of a title in the Giannis era.
Miami still needs to continue to build out the roster around Giannis, which should be their priority, but there's no question they'd accept some organic help along the way.
The Heat have their work cut out for them heading into the start of the season, and every team in the East will be chasing the defending champions. But make no mistake, any sign of weakness from the Knicks will be viewed as an opportunity for any team looking to climb the championship mountain. Including the Heat.
While the verdict is still out for the Giannis-led Heat, there's no question that the opportunity will be there for a new threat to emerge in the East, especially if there's any level of uncertainty in New York. In a conference that could be considered wide open, the Heat, as somewhat of an underdog, could be right where they want to be.
And if there are any small openings, especially from the team on top of the mountain like the Knicks, you can bet that the Heat will be looking to take full advantage.
