Even if the Miami Heat believed that it was a preferred landing spot for Giannis Antetokounmpo, if a trade was ever going to work, they were going to need a willing partner in the Milwaukee Bucks. As the Heat have learned before, that's a lot easier said than done.
And, at least up until now, the Bucks haven't been so willing to play the part. In fact, now that there are whispers that teams are reporting that Milwaukee is making "unrealistic" asks in trade talks. If that is the case, you can't help but wonder if the Bucks are that motivated to trade Giannis.
If the Bucks are in no hurry to trade Giannis, it could lead to the Heat's biggest fear yet - that Milwaukee just ends up keeping him beyond their "self-imposed" deadline.
Should that happen, it'd leave the Heat in a very awkward spot heading into the start of the NBA offseason.
Will the Bucks trade Giannis at all this offseason?
Especially with the way things played out between the Bucks and interested teams at the NBA Trade Deadline, you can't help but wonder if this is ever something that's going to happen.
At the trade deadline back in February, there was a ton of smoke around the Bucks shopping Giannis. Then, at the last minute, the Bucks decided not to pull the trigger on a deal. It wouldn't be that outlandish if that ended up happening again with Milwaukee's latest "deadline."
A little more than a month ago, just after the end of the regular season, Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam said he would like the team's future (mainly revolving around Giannis) to be settled before the 2026 NBA Draft. That's three days away.
Nothing appears close or imminent. Or at least that's the message that's being portrayed by the media.
The Heat could be left without a trade partner...again
Being so close to the draft, there's a real chance that the Bucks just elect to keep Giannis on the roster heading into the offseason, hoping that another team will leap up with an offer that beats out what the Heat currently has on the table.
Could that happen? Sure. However, considering this is a saga that has been stretched out for roughly six months now, there are certainly some doubts.
And, to be perfectly honest, that's a lot of what the Heat are betting on.
But they could very much get burned. As they did at the NBA Trade Deadline, there seems to be a growing chance that the Heat could be left without a dance partner again. Only this time, it'd be much more devastating.
