The Miami Heat may not have even played 10 regular-season games this season, but Giannis Antetokounmpo already has a great opportunity to send an MVP message on a very big stage.
When the Heat visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night, that's what's at stake for Giannis. In a star-studded matchup against Luka Doncic, Giannis can steal the spotlight with a huge performance (and a team win). He can also throw his hat in a very early race for the NBA MVP award.
Even though the Heat have gotten off to a slower start than expected, they've managed to build some momentum over the last two games. Perhaps most importantly, Giannis has looked absolutely dominant in almost every game this season.
Through the first six games, Giannis is averaging 28 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists on 59 percent shooting from the field.
Giannis has a great opportunity to send an MVP message against Luka
If they can find a way to keep merging those two variables (Giannis' dominance and the Heat stringing together wins more consecutively), there's reason to believe that Giannis can put together an MVP-level resume. Along the way, though, he'll have to have some signature moments. He has the first opportunity to do that against Luka and the Lakers.
It won't be easy, though, especially considering the season that Luka is putting together himself.
For as dominant as Giannis has looked, there's an argument to be made that Luka has been even better. In six games played this season, Luka is averaging 38 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists on 43 percent shooting from the 3-point range. He's also helped the Lakers get off to a 5-2 start.
Giannis may not have to outgun Luka individually, but if he can dominate the Lakers' frontcourt (which is a little light behind Walker Kessler) and the Heat can steal a win on the road, the superstar forward would have his first signature moment of the season.
It's far from a foregone conclusion, but as the Heat prepares for an important five-game road trip, these are the moments when stars matter more. It's often said that role players are best at home. The road is where a team's star players need to take the lead.
For the Heat, that's not going to be any different. If they're going to be successful on this road trip, they're going to need Giannis and Bam Adebayo to take the lead.
Against Luka and the Lakers, Giannis and the Heat have a great opportunity in front of them. If they're successful, not only will they secure an important win, but Giannis could also send a strong message in the process. If he's aiming for that MVP award, these are the matchups and games he has to come out on top of.
