According to Ian Begley of SNY TV, the Miami Heat are one of a few teams interested in Roman Sorkin, who just wrapped up a solid EuroBasket stint with Israel. The 29-year-old forward has spent the past four years playing with Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv overseas, but now, he could be presented with an opportunity to make the jump to the NBA.
“After a strong showing in Eurobasket with Israeli National Team, Maccabi Tel Aviv PF/C Roman Sorkin has garnered interest from POR, NYK & MIA per league sources,” Begley wrote on Twitter. “Sorkin, under contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv was one top bigs in Euroleague last season.”
Sorkin could give the Heat some additional forward depth.
Why should Heat sign Roman Sorkin?
At 6-foot-10, Sorkin won’t have the same height advantage in the NBA that he might have at times overseas. However, his production doesn’t lie, and he’s been a quality big at every level in recent years.
During his time with Israel at EuroBasket, he really stood out, highlighted by a 31-point showing in his first game of the tournament—a win over Iceland.

In his six games at EuroBasket, Sorkin played 29.0 minutes per contest, starting all but their final game against Greece. He averaged 16.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 51.4% from the field and 31.8% from beyond the three-point line.
Sorkin attempted 3.7 threes per game, and though he didn’t shoot well throughout the entire tournament, he did churn out a 4-of-7 game from deep in Israel’s opener, while also shooting 2-of-4 in their final contest.
Adding Sorkin to the mix would allow the Heat to take a chance on a tall forward who could give them minutes alongside the likes of Jaime Jaaquez Jr., Simone Fontecchio, Nikola Jovic, and Andrew Wiggins.
Even though Sorkin is already 29 years old, meaning there probably isn’t much room for him to continue to grow and develop, he could still contribute right away, even on a small scale.
With how wide open the East is, Miami should be looking to take chances on any pieces who could potentially elevate their roster, as they could have a chance to be in the playoff mix this year.
If Erik Spoelstra and the front office believe Sorkin can give them solid minutes, and he might be able to, based on his EuroBasket performance, then bringing him on board (for at least a training camp deal) should be a no-brainer.
