According to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, Terry Rozier will be active for training camp with the Miami Heat, though his future with the organization still remains unclear.
“While questions remain regarding guard Terry Rozier’s future with the Miami Heat, the expectation is Rozier will be an active participant in Heat training camp next week,” Chiang wrote. “There have been internal discussions about the options the team has with Rozier’s contract and there have even been trade discussions involving Rozier this offseason. But the Heat’s plan, barring something unforeseen, is to begin training camp Tuesday at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton with Rozier on its roster, according to multiple league sources.”
It looks like Rozier will be staying in Miami for the time being.
Should the Heat trade Terry Rozier?
When the Heat first traded for Rozier in 2023-24, he enjoyed some success in Miami. Unfortunately, last year was a major step in the wrong direction, as his efficiency plummeted.
Last season, Rozier appeared in 64 games for the Heat, playing 25.9 minutes per contest. He averaged 10.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting a woeful 39.1% from the floor and 29.5% from deep on 4.8 three-point attempts per game.
Rozier will make just over $26.6 million this season, making his contract somewhat tough to trade. But at the same time, he’s on an expiring deal, so perhaps a team out there could be willing to add him.
If not, the Heat may simply end up losing him for nothing in free agency next summer if they decide not to re-sign him. As for his spot in the rotation, that could be in question, too.
Despite Tyler Herro’s injury, the Heat clearly like Davion Mitchell, as they handed him a two-year extension this summer. Plus, they brought back Dru Smith, who, despite his awful injury luck, looks to be a solid player.
Add in Norman Powell, Pelle Larsson, and rookie Kasparas Jakucionis, and Miami’s depth at the guard position is solid. That could leave Rozier on the outside looking in of Erik Spoelstra’s day-to-day rotation.
So, while Rozier may be competing in training camp with the Heat ahead of next season, that doesn’t mean he’ll be on the squad this time next year. In fact, based on all the rumblings that have been going around this summer, it seems relatively likely that he won’t be.
