Once again, the NBA's annual GM survey has revealed that Erik Spoelstra is the top head coach in the Association. He finished with as much vote percentage (23%) as Steve Kerr and Joe Mazzulla. The bottom line is that Spoelstra is in tier 1 of head coaches in the NBA.
More than anything, that's why it should be expected that Giannis Antetokounmpo will thrive during his time with the Miami Heat. You can talk about Heat culture, the supporting cast around him, and even their organizational structure and dependability.
At the end of the day, the biggest reason why the Heat will be successful with Giannis won't be any of that. Sure, they will all hold a piece of the pie in the end, but it's the presence of Spoelstra that will put this team over the top.
The fact that Giannis didn't just get traded to one of the well-run and most stable organizations in the league, but that he also joined the best head coach in the NBA.
Doubting Erik Spoelstra is a big mistake many critics are making
It's one thing to question whether Giannis can remain healthy enough over the course of the year, or if this supporting cast is capable of helping push the team into a deep playoff run. But to do all of that, especially considering what they've already shown in the preseason, plus to doubt Spoelstra's ability to get the best out of his players - well, that's a big mistake.
Sure, just like every other coach in the league, and over the course of NBA history, Spoelstra has his faults. He's not perfect. He's made a few missteps here and there. But it's a bold strategy not to believe that he can't get the most out of Giannis at this stage of his career.
My rebuttal to that would be: Have you seen what Spoelstra has been able to do with the rosters he's been dealt over the last six years? Taking two very underwhelming rosters to two NBA Finals appearances: one as a fifth seed and one as an eighth seed. That's no small task.
That speaks to the greatness of Spoelstra. The NBA GM Survey just quietly revealed why so many Heat fans have the utmost confidence heading into this season. It's not just because Giannis is a top-5 player in the world, at worst, when healthy.
It's also the fact that they're adding a top-5 player in the world to arguably the best coach of this basketball generation.
So if Giannis is going to work and be successful in Miami, you'd have to imagine it's going to be because of Spoelstra, the best coach in the NBA.
