It wasn't necessarily a secret that the Miami Heat were desperate to land a superstar this past summer. More specifically, since missing out on him at the 2026 NBA Trade Deadline, the Heat had been laser-focused on prying Giannis Antetokounmpo away from the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Heat officially were successful in those pursuits on June 22, but one recent revelation from Giannis gives interesting insight into just how desperate Miami was in landing the superstar forward, and to what lengths the front office might've gone to in getting a deal done.
Per The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson:
"Giannis Antetokounmpo revealed on ThanalysisShow that Heat president Pat Riley flew to Greece this summer, showed up on the court that Giannis used when he was growing up and worked out with him."
Pat Riley has great respect for Giannis Antetokounmpo
We don't exactly know the full context of this, specifically the timing of it. However, whether it took place before or after the trade, it does give insight into how much Riley wanted to ensure that he was interested in playing for the Heat (which may be some sort of tampering, but I suppose that's another story for another day), or how strongly he felt about creating a strong relationship right off the bat.
Either way, Riley traveling overseas is a big deal. Whether it was before or after the trade of Giannis, it does send him (and his camp) a pretty strong message. That the Heat desperately wanted him, or that Riley recognizes just how big of a move it was for Miami to get it done.
Riley suiting up (whatever that looked like) and joining Giannis on the practice court in Greece (the one he grew up playing ball on) is also a big nod of respect, if nothing else. And those are the types of moves that are going to resonate with Giannis.
With as much respect as Giannis has spoken to the Heat organization since the trade, it's no surprise that this type of story has emerged. Logically speaking, you'd imagine this is just the first of these types of anecdotes that will eventually be shared about what transpired this past summer.
The Heat was all-in for a superstar move, and the acquisition of Giannis certainly represents that. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise how much the Heat wanted to make this happen. And Riley going to great lengths to connect with his new face of the franchise, or to woo him, says all we need to know about how much the Heat desperately wanted him.
