Nikola Jovic was expected to have a breakout season for the Miami Heat last season. That didn't happen, and it was a pretty all-around disastrous year for the versatile forward. However, one bold prediction could indicate that Jovic has a golden opportunity that not many young players are gifted.
Bleacher Report has tabbed Jovic as the Heat's top breakout candidate heading into this upcoming season. Despite the catastrophe that was last season for him individually, it'd be foolish to give up on Jovic now. Especially as he prepares to play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, this may be the best chance for the breakout season to finally arrive.
"The Miami Heat need Nikola Jović to be a big part of the team's rotation this season, especially since the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade reduced the team's overall depth...Miami doesn't have a lot of young talent to build around. Jović needs to prove he's worth this new contract and become a key rotation piece behind Antetokounmpo."
This BR writer is banking on the idea that injuries played a big part in Jovic's derailed season a year ago. Objectively, it does make a ton of sense.
Theoretically speaking, if Jovic can't hit his stride while playing next to one of the best players in the world, then maybe it's never going to click for the once-promising prospect.
And perhaps even if it is by necessity, as this BR writer notes, the Heat are going to need Jovic to embrace a big role this season. The hope is that he responds well to it, leading to a breakout year.
But as we witnessed last season with Jovic, nothing is guaranteed by any means. That said, he could not be set up for success better than he is now. The Heat need playmaking and shooting. Jovic can help supply both of those needs from Miami. He's also a useful body in the frontcourt.
Nothing has been easy for Jovic through the first few years of his career, but the stars could finally be aligned for him to have a big year.
After a season to forget, it's great to hear that not everyone has given up on Jovic. Of course, none of that matters if he doesn't take full advantage of this great second chance that he's going to get this season, playing next to Giannis.
