The Miami Heat should be one of the most active teams in the NBA when it comes to looking for potential trades this upcoming season. By the trade deadline, the Heat should have a good idea of what their roster needs, and that means they will undoubtedly be scouring the market for potential upgrades. Nicole Jovic needs to watch out, because he could be one of the first guys to be discussed as a potential trade candidate.
Up to this point in his career, Jovic hasn't proved worthy of consistent minutes in Miami. He's been a streaky shooter, and his defensive game hasn't been where it needs to be. This season, Jovic should have plenty of opportunities to prove himself. However, if he doesn't, he could be one of the Heat's top trade chips.
He makes enough money to be traded for a legitimate rotation piece. And if he doesn't prove that he can be that for the Heat, there's no doubt that Miami would consider trading him for someone who can be.
Nikola Jovic could be an obvious trade candidate
Jovic is still only 23 years old, and a couple of years ago, the Heat signed him to a large, multi-year extension. At that point, they clearly believed in him and his potential development.
But now, things have changed in Miami. The Heat's trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo shows that they are clearly trying to win a championship, and anything less than stellar play could lead to Jovic’s eventual departure.
Miami should not take any chances this season. If Jovic isn't playing well, they should absolutely throw him onto the trade block, because his salary could help them land a quality piece to help Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo compete for a championship.
Jovic will make $16.2 million this upcoming season, and again, that is more than enough to work with on the trade market if the Heat want to make a big swing trade.
So, if Jovic wants to avoid being traded, he is going to have to prove that he is capable of giving Erik Spoelstra and the Heat quality minutes on a consistent basis.
That means improving his three-point shot, becoming a reliable defender, and doing all of the little things that help lead to wins.
Jovic could be on a very short leash this season. In fact, he should be. Because at this point in his career, with how much money the Heat have decided to pay him, he needs to produce results.
If he doesn't, the trade block might be the best place for him.
