In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Norman Powell pretty much admitted that there is no lasting bad blood between him and the Miami Heat. Considering what happened between the two sides this offseason, that's a bit unexpected.
Powell was asked about the Heat after their big moves this summer, and the former Heat guard was nothing but complimentary about his former team.
“Anytime you get a generational talent like that it automatically puts you into contention. He’s a generational player… They got some dawgs. Shoutout my man D Mitch. Off night and Bam. They gonna be good. I’m excited to see how it all comes together. They signed Klay. That’s a good pickup for them. They made some good moves”
The Heat's decision to part ways with Norman Powell was a complicated one
When it was revealed that the Heat didn't make a strong effort to keep Powell in a Heat uniform, it felt like one of those situations that was going to linger between the two sides. However, Powell was able to land on his feet by securing a strong free-agent deal from the Chicago Bulls.
And based on his recent comments, Powell can't help but respect the Heat's decision this offseason. Especially considering how complicated the Heat's summer was.
The Heat's decision to part ways with Powell wasn't as clean- cut as perhaps many from the outside think it was this past summer for the Heat. Because of the move for Giannis Antetokounmpo, it complicated almost every other move for Miami. It certainly made it that much more difficult to keep the rest of the supporting cast intact.
In the end, Powell was part of the cost of doing business for Giannis. Based on the contract that Powell received from the Bulls (2-year, $45 million), there was no real path for the Heat being able to bring the All-Star guard back.
As much as Powell would've made sense on the Heat's new supporting cast alongside Giannis, the Heat just weren't in a financial position where they could've made it happen.
Powell seems to understand that.
Had the Heat not made the move for Giannis, there's probably a good chance that Powell re-signs in Miami. But they did strike the big trade for Giannis, and it became almost impossible for the Heat to keep Powell at the price he was worth on the open market.
Both sides did what was best for them in the end, and it's hard to blame either of them. Powell seems to know that.
