4 Potential Heat free agent targets with ties to Jimmy Butler
PJ Tucker
In the 2021-22 season, PJ Tucker helped the Heat earn the East’s number one seed starting next to Butler and Bam Adebayo in the frontcourt. Unfortunately, that trio ended early, following Tucker taking more money in the following free agency. Ultimately, he could have one last chance to choose where he wants to play by declining his upcoming $11 million player option.
Tucker voiced a lot of frustration with his role on his current team for the LA Clippers. He was traded there from Philadelphia in the James Harden trade, but struggled to receive any regular playing time. He tried to negotiate a buyout following this year's trade deadline, which LA refused.
The relationship between Butler and Tucker was very strong during his lone Heat season, with Butler even mentioning he was one of his “favorite” teammates of all-time. At the end of the day, this is a business, and Tucker’s decision to opt into his player option would be the most money he could get heading into the next season. Choosing to decline that option would almost guarantee he signs for no more than the vet-minimum elsewhere.
But if the veteran chooses to be happy and play somewhere he is wanted, Miami and Butler would welcome him back with open arms.
