On a recent episode of "The OGs" podcast, Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller were joined by former Miami Heat player Goran Dragic. Dragic is a fan favorite who shoots straight from the hip on this episode. From topics to his meeting with Pat Riley and why Miami was different than any other team in the bubble.
Goran Dragic “We just hung out with us... we didn't say hi to nobody."
During the bubble, Dragic and the guys talked about how other teams played golf and hung out in the lobby during off days. Dragic stated that Miami didn’t speak to any other teams. "We didn't f*** with anybody else. We just hung out with us... we didn't say hi to nobody."
With Dragic saying that, you see what Miami’s mindset was entering the bubble. I know the cool thing to do now is to make fun of “Heat Culture." Say what you want, it worked in the bubble. Miami entered the bubble with a no-nonsense attitude, which got them to the finals
Dragic and Bam Adebayo were both injured, yet the national media never talks about how Miami had two key starters out for multiple games during the finals. It still stings that Miami wasn’t healthy, especially for Dragic, because that was his only time in the finals. Up to that point, he was Miami’s leading scorer and was a considerable factor in Miami's getting to the finals.
Pat Riley talks to Dragic
“You need to be better…We didn’t pay you for this s***”
That's what Pat Riley said to Dragic after he signed his five-year, $90 million dollar deal. It has been some years, but Dragic struggled early on with Miami.
To be fair, coming to a new team in the middle of the year can be an adjustment. Miami has a confident expectation when it comes to their conditioning for a guy to join mid-year, and having that conditioning is going to be a struggle for anyone.
Also, Dragic was brought to a team with established guys like Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who have been on final runs with Miami; Dragic tried to fit in as best he could. The legend of Pat Riley continues with him telling Dragic to play better because Miami gave him all that money. Luckily, Dragic was great for Miami and lived up to his contract.
This was a must-listen. Dragic and Haslem have great chemistry. It's funny to hear Dragic repeatedly refer to Haslem as “OG” during the episode.
Dragic discussed his favorite Wade moment. It was the "Purple Shirt" guy whom Wade talked to after each basket he made in the fourth quarter of a playoff game in Charlotte.
Dragic also talks about how, in Atlanta, he got his tooth knocked out and threw it at the referee because he didn’t call the foul, about the early days of Duncan Robinson's development and more. Every Miami Heat fan needs to listen to this episode.
