Miami Heat add another guard to training camp roster, opening up competition
By Wes Goldberg
The Miami Heat have signed guard Caleb Daniels to a training camp deal, completing their preseason roster a week before camp opens in the Bahamas, the team announced Thursday.
The Heat’s training camp roster now stands at the maximum 21 players. Daniels joins guards Isaiah Stevens and Zyon Pullin on Exhibit 10 contracts. Those three will join players on the 15-man standard roster and three players on two-way contracts when the team begins training camp at Baha Mar in the Bahamas on Oct. 1.
Who is Caleb Daniels?
Daniels spent last season with the Heat’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, appearing in 31 regular season games (22 starts). He averaged 12.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 31.5 minutes while shooting 43.4% overall and 34.5% from 3-point range.
Daniels was one of the Skyforce’s top players, recording six 20-point games, including four consecutive 20-point games in February. Daniels finished second in rebounds and third in points, assists, blocks and three-point field goals made.
In seven games with the Heat in summer league, Daniels averaged 6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 40.6% overall. He stood out as a steady hand to guide the offense, posting a 4-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Two cents
At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Daniels is being developed similar to Gabe Vincent. The 25-year-old joins two other guards on training camp invites. It’s clear the Heat want to see more of that group. Daniels, Stevens and Pullin all have a chance to push guard Dru Smith for a two-way contract.
