Wade is regarded as the greatest player in Heat history, having helped the franchise to three championships, including its first in 2006, after being drafted fifth overall in the 2003 draft. He is the franchise's all-time leader in games, points, assists and steals.
Pat Riley announced that the organization would honor Wade with a statue during Wade’s Hall of Fame night at Kaseya Center in January.
"When we retired his jersey in February 2020, I said Dwyane was the face of this franchise forever, and I meant it," Riley said during a halftime ceramony. "Dwyane’s legacy is a towering one not only for the Miami Heat but for Miami-Wade County. I can't think of a better way to honor him than by memorializing that legacy."
Wade fought back tears during the announcement, which he said came a surprise.
"I didn't dream of this,” Wade said. “I'm just so grateful. I can't wait for that day.”
