Heat Rumors: Heat 'undecided' on offering Jimmy Butler an extension
The biggest question facing the Miami Heat this summer is whether they’ll offer Jimmy Butler a full, three-year, $113 million contract extension. Butler has made it clear he wants to sign an extension this summer, while team president Pat Riley has publicly stated his preference to wait until Butler can become a free agent next summer.
According to The Action Network’s Matt Moore, Miami is currently "undecided in their front office" about whether or not to make a max extension offer to Butler.
If the Heat aren’t willing to offer Butler a new max contract that would pay him through his age-37 season, then reports indicate that the Philadelphia 76ers will. The Golden State Warriors have also been linked to Butler, and other teams like the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs could make sense as a potential landing spot. If the Heat decide they aren’t willing to offer Butler the contract he’s looking for, then chances are another team will.
Heat Rumors: Patty Mills on returning to the Heat next season: ‘I definitely hope so.’
Despite playing just 13 games for the Heat last season, Patty Mills saw enough that he’d be open to returning next season. Asked during a visit to Jr. Heat Basketball Camp at Cooper City High School if he wants to re-sign with the Heat next season, Mills told reporters, “I definitely hope so.”
“I’ve really appreciated my time here at the Heat, and have really come to understand what this organization is really about. And I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as learning a lot of things at the same time. Who knows what’s going to happen?”
Mills, 35, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. While he isn’t a top priority for the Heat, he could be an option to fill out the roster after bigger decisions are made.
Heat Rumors: Miami looking to add a point guard in the draft
The Heat are casting a wide net when it comes to who they are hosting for pre-draft workouts, but there’s a growing belief in league circles that they view adding a point guard as a team need.
According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Pitt guard Carlton Carrington, “has been visiting teams primarily in the Nos. 10-to-20 range, with franchises looking for point guards such as Utah, Miami and Orlando being especially interesting landing spots.”
Other point guards the Heat have worked out include Providence’s Devin Carter, USC’s Isaiah Collier, UConn’s Tristen Newton, Florida’s Zyon Pullin and USC’s Boogie Ellis.
Another note from ESPN’s latest mock draft: Colorado forward Tristan Da Silva has a spot on Miami’s draft board.
“[Da Silva] has interest as high as Memphis at No. 9, but will likely fall into the next range, where an array of playoff-caliber teams, including the Kings, Heat, Sixers, and Lakers, are all interested in his services.”
